General information only

Everything on CrimeAustralia, including suburb profiles, rankings, charts, address reports and insurance-risk indicators, is general information. It is not legal, financial, insurance, real estate or personal safety advice, and it does not take your circumstances into account. About the figures

  • Recorded crime is not all crime. The figures count offences reported to or detected by police. Reporting rates differ by offence type and area, and changes in policing activity can move the numbers without any change in actual crime.
  • Rates depend on resident population. Places with few residents but many visitors (city centres, shopping and entertainment areas, transport hubs) can show very high rates.
  • States differ. Each state uses its own offence categories, areas and release schedule. We map them to common categories (see the methodology), but comparisons across states are approximate.
  • Areas are approximate. Where police publish data only for larger areas (for example Queensland police divisions, WA districts and NT regions), a figure describes that whole area, not a specific street or property.
  • Data can change. Agencies revise past figures, and the latest period may be incomplete. Population figures are estimates.

Rankings and risk indicators

A ranking or "higher than average" label compares recorded rates between places. It is not a judgement that a place is safe or unsafe, and it says nothing about any individual, household or business there. Insurance-risk indicators show how often relevant offences are recorded compared with the state; they are not premiums, quotes or insurer assessments. Insurers price risk using their own data.

Housing and growth figures

Rent, income, tenure, population growth and building approval figures come from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and may be several years old. They are not valuations or price forecasts.
